The situation on the East Hill, exposed to the prevailing SW winds, makes the location ideal for a kite festival at most times of the year particularly Spring and Summer. This could be profiled as a “The Observer Building Kite Festival” and marketed as a free event for people of all ages i.e. families, kite specialists etc. Kites can be made cheaply or bought online. It could be used to inform the public about OB and perhaps raise money through sponsorship and prizes for the best kites in different categories. There are many examples of kite festivals around the world which in some cases have become famous regular events over time. a kite festival would provide great publicity for Hastings generally and OB specifically with lots of great photography opportunities for the local and national press.
