Taking it forward

Update: Online Community Events during lockdown – join us

We are excited to announce three upcoming events online during January and February 2021. Register for a free ticket and have your say.

19th January, 7-8.30pm: Hastings Town Centre – Past, Present, Future?
Hastings Town Centre: Past, Present, Future
Our ebullient MC John Knowles will host a discussion, with input from the audience, about what Hastings Town Centre means to us, and what we want to see here in the future. We’ll have a presentation about the historical high street from local historian Steve Peak, and a range of guests all with their own perspectives on how we use the town centre as a community, and how we can change things for the better. Register for your free ticket.

26th January, 7-8.30pm: Changing Hastings – One Year On…
Changing Hastings One Year On
Gentrification or Housing Crisis; Second home or AirBnB; Social or Private Renter; Landlord or tenant; Owner, renter, squatter or bust? This meeting is a forum for a town-wide discussion, avoiding the cliched arguments of DFL Vs local but recognising that disparities exist. We’ll be joined by local performers and an array of speakers for three themed panel discussions. Questions, comments and ideas will be invited from our online audience on the night. And we’ll continue hosting the conversation before and after this event on Changing Hastings and Common Treasury of Adaptable Ideas pages on Facebook. Register for your free ticket.

23rd February, 7-8.30pm: Sustainable Hastings
Sustainable Hastings : Planting the Seeds for a better future together
A big, green conversation: We’ll hear from local panellists such as Julia Hilton (artist, landscape architect and more), Gonzalo Alvarez (chairman of UN Association- Climate and Oceans), Dr Ralitsa Hiteva (research fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex), Hannah Robbins (Wonderfill, plastic-free refill shop in St Leonards), Anna Locke (permaculture and food sustainability) and Shelley Feldman (launching the Hastings Library of Things). Register for your free ticket. We have gathered resources – further reading, and links, to follow up if your interest is piqued. You can find those resources here.

The Hastings Emerging Futures Project – Taking the Common Treasury conversation forward

Since early 2020, we’ve all been living and working in ways that were unimaginable when The Common Treasury of Adaptable Ideas began in 2018. The project’s original aim of bringing people together to share and test inspiring ideas from elsewhere has taken on new forms, like the community conversations that took place on Isolation Station Hastings in May and June.

At the same time, new initiatives providing solutions to unexpected challenges are springing up all over town as we try to adapt to a complex and rapidly-changing environment. In this context, the idea of a Common Treasury is more important than ever – it offers us a shared space for community conversations, a way to share new ideas, tools and techniques that can shape our plans, puts people and the planet at the heart of future projects as we build back better.

Extending the impact of the Common Treasury with Hastings Emerging Futures

In September 2020, we successfully collaborated with local partner organisations involved in the Hastings Emergency Response Community Hub to fund a futures visioning project financed by the National Lottery Emerging Futures Fund.
Hastings Emerging Futures activities are helping to further develop, strengthen and build the work of our Common Treasury beyond our project end in December 2020.
